About us

We’re thrilled to have you here. We’re just a few passionate outdoor enthusiasts who’ve been hitting the trails and pitching tents since our early years. Our frustration with some of the advice online led us to create Wilderness Redefined, a platform offering practical, real-life advice about the great outdoors.

Our Mission

We aim to help people find the information they need to confidently explore the awe-inspiring wilderness. We’re driven by the simple desire to make outdoor adventures more accessible and enjoyable for all.

How we started

James founded Wilderness Redefined during the pandemic, when he realised that years of chasing career progress had turned his previously outdoorsy life into a city bound one. Renewed with a sense of desire to reclaim his passion for the outdoors, he started rebuilding his collection of outdoor equipment.

Something struck him in this experience. Much of the advice out there was tailored towards the more serious outdoor audience – mountaineers and long distance hikers. Trying to find real, fair reviews of casual camping and hiking gear that didn’t end up with the equivalent of a recommendation for a $500 pair of elite mountaineering boots was rare.

If he, with his many years of experience hiking and camping, struggled to decipher this information, just how anxiety inducing must it be for someone wanting to try the outdoors for the first time? Speaking to friends and discovering how many newbies had been put off entirely, or blown $4,000 on a fancy air tent that will only be used once a year, confirmed this suspicion.

This is what launched the idea for Wilderness Redefined – a way for us to document our learning as we rediscover the outdoors and provide reviews built for beginner or intermediate outdoorsy people.

Chris continues this journey using his decades of experience as a scout leader.

An eager explorer of the great outdoors from an early age, Piers has hiked and cycled for more than six thousand miles across North America, Europe and the United Kingdom.

These days you’ll likely find him traipsing around the South Downs National Park, riding around Colorado on his 49 year-old Schwinn “Benny the Super Hip”, or helping to encourage others out into the wilderness as well.

Kara Froggatt author at Wilderness Redefined

Kara Froggatt

CREATOR

Kara grew up in New Zealand where camping in the backyard as a child turned into multi-night trips in the National Parks as a teenager and then a full blown backpacking adventure for a year in Asia, by herself in her early 20’s.

Camping, bush walking, car camping and road trips still feature heavily in her current life style. She lives right next door to a World Heritage National Park on Springbrook Mountain and highly recommends having them as next door neighbours!

James Black, the founder of Wilderness Redefined

James Black

CREATOR

James has been escaping to the outdoors for as long as he can remember. This first started in family camping trips but soon turned into adventure camps and hiking through the Scottish Hebrides.

Now he has turned towards trying to make camping more comfortable and accessible.
